2019 CB Stingley Jr accepts LSU offer

The offer from LSU head coach Les Miles hung in the air mere seconds before cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. snared it like an errant pass.

“We went up to Coach Miles office,” the Class of 2019 star told TigerBait.com. “As soon as we sat down, he shook my hand and the first thing he said in a happy voice was, ‘LSU would be a great fit for you.’ He asked me if I wanted to commit right now and I said, ‘Yeah I do.’ It was pretty quick.”

After impressing the staff at its satellite camp last week in New Orleans, Stingley Jr., put on a repeat performance at LSU on-campus camp on Friday.

“At the satellite camp, they were impressed with my physicality and, the way I pressed,” he said. “The first thing I did was an interception on a slant route and I think it was a one-handed catch. Then later on at LSU’s camp, I did good in individuals and that’s when I got called up.”

His mother and father were with him when he committed on Friday.

“They were really happy when Coach Miles first said it,” Stingley Jr. said. “They were in shock. They were happy for me because it will lead to a whole bunch of stuff in the future.”

At 14 years old, Stingley Jr. measured at 5-10 ¾, 172 pounds and ran a 4.5 40 for LSU’s coaches. Playing for the Dunham School last season, he said “I was first-team all-district. I think I had five or six interceptions and three punt returns for touchdowns.”

LSU was Stingley Jr.’s first offer but he said he heard from Georgia as recently as Thursday night.

If he didn’t know already, Stingley Jr. learned about the power of social media and recruiting after posting the news on Twitter.

“Within the hour my phone was just blowing up,” he said. “It was non-stop. I got calls from (Tigerbait.com) and others, just like that.”

Stingley comes from a sporting family. His father Derek Stingley has played and coached in the Arena Football League, and was also a minor league baseball player in the Phillies system. His grandfather Darryl Stingley was a wide receiver the New England Patriots, who was paralyzed in a preseason game after a hit by Raiders safety Jack Tatum in 1978.
