On-campus camps still priority for Miles

In slightly more than two weeks, LSU jumps into the world of satellite football camps for the first time.

The Tigers football program will hold a camp in Bossier City on June 2. Two days later, LSU will play host to a camp at the New Orleans Saints facility in Metairie. On back-to-back days in mid-June, the Tigers staff will conduct a clinic in the Dallas (June 13) and Houston (June 14) areas.

However, do not get the idea that coach Les Miles’ thinking has changed. The two most important camps are the ones which will be held on the LSU campus – from June 9-11 and from July 21-23. Miles wants players to see what actually takes place at LSU.

“We want to be Louisiana first,” said Miles at a press conference Tuesday afternoon. “That’s why we are starting camps in Shreveport and New Orleans. But, we want all of the prospects on our campus so they can see the culture we have here.”

LSU is partnering with ten in-state schools for the camps in Bossier City and Metairie – UL-Lafayette, UL-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Grambling, Southern, Northwestern State, McNeese State, SLU, Nicholls State and Louisiana College. The one absent Louisiana school is Tulane, which is going in with Texas A&M.

LSU is also hosting a kicking game on June 3 and a youth camp on June 5-6 on its campus. LSU, in conjunction with the New Orleans Recreation Department, will run a camp at Joe Brown Park in New Orleans on June 7. That camp will be free for participants.

“For nine days in June, we’ll be in Louisiana,” Miles said. “We won’t leave the state until we have had camps in the North (Bossier City), the South (Metairie and New Orleans) and on our campus.”

LSU and Texas-San Antonio, whose head coach is former Tigers assistant Frank Wilson, are hosting the camp on June 13 at DeSoto (Tex.) High School. The Houston camp is being sponsored by two high schools – Episcopal and Northshore. It is expected that LSU will be the only major college at this camp.

Miles firmly believes that just having a prospect at an out-of-state camp will not complete the deal in the recruiting process.

“I don’t know how imperative it is to just attend an out-of-state camp for four hours,” Miles said. “You still have to get the prospect on our campus. If someone can’t afford to go to two camps, we would love to have him come to the one on our campus.”

LSU had been scheduled to attend four camps sponsored by Sound Mind Sound Body Academy. Due to the fact that the Tigers are holding their own camps, it is questionable if Miles or members of his staff will still participate in those events.

“I don’t know if you get enough out of those mega-camps,” Miles said. “I would love to be there if I have the time.”
